Star Cellar Door
With millions of dollars in investment courtesy of owner Gerry Ryan, Mitchelton is back on top. The revitalised cellar door and restaurant complex is now joined by a stunning, 58-room boutique hotel and day spa overlooking the Goulburn River. It blends in beside the timeless beauty of the low-slung winery with its iconic 55-metre tower, a building rightly deserving of status as an architectural icon.
No-one stands still here for long. Last year, Ryan reprised the Preece second label with some handy $18 value wines (the chardonnay and shiraz, in particular, are worth checking out), bringing another layer to the Mitchelton story, which started back in 1969. Legendary winemaker, Colin Preece, was engaged to plant the vineyard and with great prescience, he chose marsanne, which has gone on to become the maker’s signature white wine.
Mitchelton is a master of Rhône Valley varieties, but its chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon should never be underestimated. JENI PORT
