Gippsland

It’s not as famous as several neighbouring wine destinations but Gippsland takes in spectacular scenery of rugged coastlines and bucolic vistas at every turn. It is also an expansive region stretching to the New South Wales border with most wineries family-owned.

Winemaker Marcus Satchell and Lisa Sartori are the dynamic duo behind Dirty Three Wines and their cellar door known as D3HQ, an urban winery in Inverloch. The Gippsland landscape is home to the three distinct single vineyard pinot noirs at the heart of this label – with another known as Sourced by Satch – Marcus’ nickname. He even suggests tunes to drink those wines – Adele’s Rolling in the Deep while sipping the 2018 Pinot Gris.

Back at the modern sleek space that is D3HQ, relax with a plate of local cheese or small goods or book in for a private tutored tasting and let these two explain why their patch of dirt makes great wine.  JANE FAULKNER
