Hilltops / Tumbarumba

These two wine regions are more about growing the grapes than making the wines or offering their wines to eager wine lovers. Isolation is the issue, as is momentum with few cellar doors open regular hours. If you’re planning a road trip, be sure to contact the wineries beforehand. The Hilltops is growing some incredible grapes, especially shiraz.

Three families own the 35-hectare Grove Estate vineyard with almost another 100 hectares farmed individually as part of this collective venture. While selling fruit is the main aim (they supply the likes of Clonakilla, who also make the Grove Estate wines) the partnership’s frontman, Brian Mullany is as enthusiastic about sharing his Grove Estate wines as he is about growing the grapes. Naturally shiraz leads the way with Italian varieties nebbiolo and primitivo adding interest. The whites offer extraordinary value – as indeed all the Grove Estate wines do. PETER BOURNE
