James & Co. Wines
Star Cellar Door
Ricky James divides his time between his cellar door on Rutherglen’s Main Street and the vines of Fighting Gully Road in Beechworth where he sources his fruit for James & Co.
It’s an unusual arrangement to be sure but the wines, which at this stage are all Beechworth-sourced, are excellent and explore a combination of classic grape varieties like shiraz and cabernet sauvignon and popular new alternatives such as pinot grigio and sangiovese.
Sangiovese is increasingly the star and James chooses to showcase its varied appeal as a sparkling rosé, a still rosé and a blending partner to shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. The Sparkling Sangiovese Rosé will open your eyes to the hitherto unknown ability of the grape as a sparkling. Sensational! The still Rosé is now James’ most popular wine, with production increasing each year. The cellar door, which also houses James’ wife’s photography business, offers ‘cheese your own adventure’ platters with the tasting. JENI PORT
