Deft winemaking, innovative viticulture and career-defining leadership have helped shape the results of this year's awards, judged by panel chair JANE SKILTON MW, along with industry experts STEPHEN WONG MW and DR JO BURZYNSKA.The 2022 New Zealand Winemaker of the Year is NICHOLAS BROWN of Black Estate. Previous winners include Dom Maxwell, Greystone (2018); Helen Masters, Ata Rangi (2019); Jen Parr, Valli (2020) and Jules Taylor, Jules Taylor Wines (2021). The gong for Viticulturist of the Year goes to BART ARNST of The Darling Wines, while NICK MILLS of Rippon picks up the Award for Leadership. This year we also introduce the inaugural Young Winemaker of the Year Award, awarded to SAM ROUSE of Martinborough’s Dry River. While our plans for an IRL celebration have, yet again, been thwarted, we are thrilled to share our winners’ stories on the following pages.
