Momofuku Seiōbo is to be congratulated for its carefully curated wine list that presents the diner with food-friendly styles which complement the unique flavours of Paul Carmichael’s Caribbean dishes. The list is contained in size yet diverse in nature. The wines are organised by style, giving subtle guidance on texture and palate weight.

You’ll find plenty of examples with lively, bright acidity. There are a few muscadets and also a range of chenins of varying weight and origin, as well as gringet from the Savoie and a respectable number of rieslings. If you are after something light, textural and savoury there are many delicious wines to choose from, as well as some skin contact and amber styles.

There is also an excellent number of light reds, which work particularly well with the food, as well as an appropriate number of structured, savoury styles. It is clear that every label has been carefully chosen to ensure the diner has a stunning food and wine experience.

The pairings with the nine-course tasting menu are eclectic and original with a mix of spirits and wine. You can also opt for a smaller five-beverage selection, and there’s a fabulous non-alcoholic pairing option as well.

WINE LIST Kara Maisano
WINEs ON LIST 607 (19 by the glass)
WINE PRICES $$$ ($12-$25 by the glass)

An exceptional wine list which offers diners a finely tuned selection of local and international labels. It is a carefully managed, ever-changing list that seems to satisfy every requirement: there is an excellent selection of Italian wines, in line with the restaurant’s theme; local Victorian wines are supported, though so are interstate wines; the diversity in variety and region is outstanding; the pricing is fair; there is something for everyone’s budget, and contemporary producers sit comfortably alongside the classics. Sommelier Kara Maisano makes it look easy, however, no doubt there have been countless hours of tasting and research behind every listing.

WINE ON LIST 260 (20 by the glass)
WINE PRICES $$$ ($14-$65 by the glass)

One of the stars of the 2019 Awards, this carefully curated, immaculately presented list shows what a clever sommelier can achieve in a small restaurant. The focus is on wines that suit the restaurant’s light, bright, produced-based dishes. Attention is paid to the winemakers and each is named alongside their wine. The cutting edge, organic and biodynamic producers are targeted. There’s a focus on small producers; diversity in the white wines on offer, as well as Jura blanc and sous voile (aged with flor yeast) whites; gamay and lightly framed reds from Beaujolais and around the world. Established superstars such as JJ Prum, Mt Pleasant ‘Elizabeth’, TarraWarra, Giaconda are a reference point and provide balance. A great list.
