Food and wine matching is a skill that many profess to have, yet few ever master. Not so at Provenance, where the degustation pairings create sheer gastronomic bliss, and also highlight the inherent quality of local wines.
Owners Michael Ryan and Jeanette Henderson have created a slice of culinary heaven. Ryan’s food is daring and delicious with Japanese nuances and a regional base. Damian Moylan, sommelier and restaurant manager, presides over the admirable wine list.
The seasonal menu is based on the best produce available at the time. You may be treated to confit of Harrietville trout, raw beetroot salad, capers and lavender matched with a youthful Mac Forbes Spring Riesling; or okra fritters, baby vegetables, soy milk broth and ginger with a marsanne, roussanne, viognier blend from Oxenbury. Vegetarians will rejoice in a tailored degustation with equally exquisite wine matches.
The standard and premium wine pairings are both excellent; the latter has a more international flavour. Umeshu and sake pairings add additional excitement. Toni Paterson MW
