Food and wine matching is a skill that many profess to have, yet few ever master. Not so at Provenance, where the degustation pairings create sheer gastronomic bliss, and also highlight the inherent quality of local wines.

Owners Michael Ryan and Jeanette Henderson have created a slice of culinary heaven. Ryan’s food is daring and delicious with Japanese nuances and a regional base. Damian Moylan, sommelier and restaurant manager, presides over the admirable wine list.

The seasonal menu is based on the best produce available at the time. You may be treated to confit of Harrietville trout, raw beetroot salad, capers and lavender matched with a youthful Mac Forbes Spring Riesling; or okra fritters, baby vegetables, soy milk broth and ginger with a marsanne, roussanne, viognier blend from Oxenbury. Vegetarians will rejoice in a tailored degustation with equally exquisite wine matches.

The standard and premium wine pairings are both excellent; the latter has a more international flavour. Umeshu and sake pairings add additional excitement. Toni Paterson MW

It has to be said, that the baked in-house bread and hand-churned (whipped and salted) butter at Yellow in Potts Point is up there with some of the best in the country.  The wine list focuses on interesting and mainly alternative wines to match to their detail focused vegetarian menu.  Love how the wines are listed in order of weight and mouthfeel - a crucial feature when trying to decide what to match to your food.  Listing wines from Jura to Serbia, to Long Island in the US, Yellow presents us with a varied and exciting wine list - there is a well-priced seven-course menu with matching wines available… what better way to dine than to leave all the work in other people’s hands?

Of course the world-class view is an undeniable draw card but I would dine at Altitude purely for the wine!  The wine list is an expert compilation of fine Australian labels and worthy imports.  Not only does it showcase our best producers, but it also introduces the diner to lesser known gems. Bravo!
