WINE PRICES $$$ ($86-$13 by the glass)

For some, by-the-glass is THE wine list. It offers discovery, adventure, and even the chance of a once-in-a-lifetime taste of greatness. Quay head sommelier Amanda Yallop devotes 10 per cent of her list to wines by the glass, including wines that are forever classic (Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon), daring in execution (Ochota Barrels The Slint Vineyard Chardonnay), food-friendly (Domaine Simha Gamay) or simply without peer (Krug Grande Cuvée).

The list doesn’t try to be everything to everyone, but it entices and excites. New-age natural wines and biodynamic styles are embraced alongside more conventional philosophies. Australian wines are the core, in keeping with the contemporary Australian cooking of master chef Peter Gilmore, but there’s a tight selection of contrasting and complementary styles from Germany, France, Italy and New Zealand. The two representatives of Spain, 2012 carignans from Priorat’s Terroir Al Limit, introduce the other feature to this excellent list: the Coravin wine preservation system, which enables sommeliers to offer aged wines or wines of note previously considered way too expensive or rare to serve by the glass. This is an all-encompassing, truly world class wine list. And a list of fabulous value – how often do you see a wine like 2004 Dom Pérignon
for $280? The selection by the glass, thanks to the use of Coravin, is truly astounding – take your pick of the latest Sass, Dageuneaux Silex, 1990 Penfold’s Bin 920, 1982 Moulin Touchais and so much more.

Long one of Brisbane’s most popular Italian eateries, ideally situated on the river, the list at Il Centro focuses strongly on top Italian wines to complement the cuisine, though there are a great many other options as well. For those who are happy to explore the list, some seriously good value - $250 for a 2006 Conterno Romirasco? Good luck doing better than that.
