CUISINEModern Australian
WINE LIST John Mackinnon
WINEs ON LIST 440 (28 by the glass)
WINE PRICES $$$ ($28-$10 by the glass)

Sommelier John MacKinnon dedicates a large proportion of the list to local wines, presenting a set of Australia’s best and most interesting labels. The tone is set with the mainly local by-the-glass listing. There are a few worthy favourites, like Vasse Felix and Tyrrell’s, and the selection is contemporary and vibrant.

The main list is arranged varietally, then by country, and further segments the Australian wines into region of origin. The list of Australian sparkling is commendable. Riesling and semillon have a spread of ages and the selection of sauvignon blanc and pinot gris is astute. The Australian chardonnay showcase is a highlight, as is pinot noir. Cabernet sauvignon and blends are given deserved attention, but shiraz steals the show. It’s a rock-solid list where diners can choose Australian wine with utter confidence. toni paterson mw
