Cuisine Modern European
WINE LIST Bronwyn Kabboord
WINES ON LIST 50 (14 by the glass)
WINE PRICES $$ ($24-$9 by the glass)

In taking out its third successive Best Small List win, Merricote enters the Wine List of the Year Awards Hall of Fame.Sommelier/co-owner Bronwyn Kabboord is a fearless decision-maker and her keen sense of discovery brings wine lovers back time and time again. She can be a trendsetter. The 2015 sparkling savagnin from Canberra winemaker, Sassafrass, is a pét-nat, the new darling of the natural wine movement. Kabboord can be old-school, too. The inclusion of Mornington Peninsula pinot noir producer of note, Hurley Vineyard with its 2013 pinot is testament to that.

Her list moves seamlessly from the Yarra Valley and Margaret River to Piedmont, the Languedoc, Sicily, Greece and Madrid. Merricote’s modern European cuisine asks for no less but there is always room for a fortified to close the meal, maybe the classic Aussie DP57 topaque from Seppeltsfield or Tesseron XO Cognac? CUISINEModern Australian
WINE LIST Karen Gough
WINEs ON LIST 500 (25 by the glass)
WINE PRICES $$ ($12-$6.50 by the glass)

A confident and inspiring list featuring producers unafraid to take the road less travelled.  Its a tiny list that journeys through over 30 different varieties, either as straight varietals or blends.  The list has an intimacy, and a distinct local flavour, supporting small producers, including the neighbourhood brewers.  That said, global wines and beers seem to slip effortlessly into the mix.

CUISINEModern Greek Taverna
WINE LIST Andrew Phillpot and Nikki Reid
WINES ON LIST 45 (13 by the glass)
WINE PRICES $$ ($14.50-$10.50 by the glass)

Since 2008, the Hellenic Republic has been one of Melbourne's greatest champions of Greek wines. At the original Brunswick restaurant there is no alternative offered but, fortunately, excellent tasting notes for each Greek wine help relieve any anxiety about choice. Sub-headings like "Light & Bright" and "Spiced & Exotic" will entice further discovery. And then there's the Greek beers and ouzos. This is immersion at its best.

CUISINEModern Vietnamese
WINE LIST Ben Knight
WINES ON LIST 51 (16 by the glass)
WINE PRICES $ ($12-$8 by the glass)

Sommelier Ben Knight has brought some of the fun and mischief from his Bottega wine list to downtown Seddon and the new Vietnamese restaurant, Luxsmith. Expect the same amusing introductions to wines, some quirkyness, some new names and old and above all, wines well-suited to a little Viet spice. There's even sake which Ben recommends with the spicier dishes. You will be entertained, probably learn a few things and be thoroughly delighted with this smart international list.
