“We treat our beer just as seriously as our wine.” These words gladden the heart of any beer drinker, especially on the opening page of a restaurant wine list.

Beer is important at Charred Kitchen & Bar in Orange. The restaurant opened last year, and its serious approach to both grain as well as grape perfectly captures the energy of this exciting food and wine hub in country New South Wales.

You don’t see too many beers on draught at restaurants, but Charred opens its beer list with five, including a pale ale from Orange’s own Walkers Brewing Co. Breweries from around the state like The Little Brewing Company, Nomad Brewing Co and Murray’s Craft Brewing Co feature, but this is essentially a cherry-picked list of creative brewers from around the world like New Zealand’s Yeastie Boys fooling around with Earl Grey blue flower tea to generate florals in their Gunnamatta IPA, and Schöfferhofer’s daring combination of beer and grapefruit juice, a world first.

The overriding impression for beer lovers is that enough styles are here to enjoy throughout a meal without resorting to the wine list. JENI PORT

Hard not to love a list where every category steps up above and beyond expectations. Just when you think Riesling must be the highlight, along comes Chardonnay and Pinot to take things to the next level. Can there be a collection of dessert wines to compare with these? Certainly, it is impossible to imagine a list of local and international gins to come close. Excellence at every stage.

Overwhelming would be an understatement.  Magnificent?  Also an understatement.  Over 1000 glorious wines, beer and spirits spanning the globe.  Tasmania is given deserving recognition, with multiple vintages of the best wines, as are the great wines of Australia. The international selection is world-class, filled with prestigious names from all major wine producing regions.  But there are also plenty of cutting edge wines, as one would expect.  Although prices can climb dazzlingly high for the rarest wines, there is an extraordinary number of excellent, affordable wines making good wine accessible to all.

CHAIRMAN'S COMMENTS: The beer selection at The Botanical, owned by the Colonial Leisure Group, remains impressive. There are seven beers on tap and 59 bottled beers. The Source at MONA has a comprehensive list of world beers (65 in all).
