Regional restaurants are a superb way to gain an insight into the wines of an area, and Settlers Tavern is one of the most excellent examples around. In fact, you could skip the local winery tour altogether and wine and dine here instead.

It must be said upfront that the Settlers Tavern wine list is proudly international; however, its offering of local wines within this context is simply outstanding, with over fifty wineries represented.

Established producers and classic wines are well supported. However, what sets this list apart is its inclusion of small volume, artisanal wines. It definitely has its finger on the pulse, so, if you want to find out what is new and hip in Margaret River, this is your place.

To aid decision-making, the list is brimming with informal and chatty prose about wine style and producer. This encourages experimentation and gives one the confidence to try something new.

Sophisticated wine in an informal setting is the secret to Settlers’ success. Beautiful glassware and incredibly fair prices add to the charm. Credit goes to Karen and Robert Gough for crafting a casual, wine-focused tavern that is a drawcard for locals and visitors alike. Toni Paterson MW

Black Cow is proudly Tasmanian whether it's sourcing Robbins Island wagyu steak from North-West Tasmania, a local botanical-based gin or a fine riesling or pinot noir. This year, four local shirazes are added to the list. The full bounty of Tassie wines and produce is celebrated here, and is to be congratulated. That said, the wine list is balanced by wines well-suited to the steakhouse menu, and in 154 wines, takes a broad international approach to sourcing. Prices are fair, value is assured.

It's great to see such strong regional support for the local wines and the care taken to champion a single area. This is admirable and especially relevant in today’s discussions around distance and lessening footprints, supporting local and agricultural. That said, it’s not parochial either, offering everything from sake to European favourites. The sort of wine list that makes you want to snuggle in on a cold afternoon and enjoy country food, wine and hospitality.
