This wine bar in the heart of Darwin has built on its impressive start, more than doubling the list with about 300 bottles waiting to be opened every day. The international focus is ever present and was expanded with the wines of Spain being the focus in March, especially on its modestly-priced by the glass list. They also offered a Sunday afternoon educational tasting.

Given the climate, it’s not surprising that beer drinkers are well catered for with seven beers on tap (including four from overseas). The spirits list and cocktails also attract attention. There’s a thoughtful range of Champagne and sparkling wines from around the world while the majority of the wines sit in the $40 to $60 price bracket. Alternative varieties are popular and range from Jim Barry’s Assyrtiko and KT’s Vermentino to Nigl Grüner from Kremstal, Tondini’s Vermentino from Sardinia and Charquino Albariño from Rias Baixas. With more than a dozen rosés available, the climate is also an influence on the popularity of this style.

The Stone House has introduced the Monuments – a cellar reserve of older vintages offering some impressive wines at fair prices.

WINE PRICES $$ ($19-$11 by the glass)

A stoically premium, Australian-focussed wine list with the added bonus of a roll call of top tier wineries offered in mini vertical runs. Cult wines like Rockford Basket Press Shiraz and Torbreck Run RIg are offered across multiple vintages while a cellared collection of icon Australian reds contains names like Yarra Yering, Rusden, Grant Burge Shadrach and Jim Barry. The main body of the collection is equally impressive in the Australian big name department, though there's a spectacular collection of premier Champagne houses, again available through multiple vintages and cuvees. The general motif of the list, Australian, fuller flavoured red wines, marries well with the dining experience, but don't miss gems contained under the headings riesling, semillon or sauvignon blanc, where a roll call of outstanding local and imported wines reside. Overall its a wine list with a strong message and a breadth of options with an enviable line up of younger wines augmented by a serious cellar.

The Stone House is a trailblazer in the NT: a much expanded list offers the locals unheard of access to European wines while building the Australasian content impressively. The balance takes into account local conditions with heaps of beers on tap and by the bottle,  plenty of bubbly, and offering chilled red wine when appropriate. There's also a reserve list (the Monuments) adding depth and breadth to the list.
