Winemaker of the Year 2018

It is difficult to imagine a higher calibre of finalists than this year’s contenders, which speaks volumes about the winner of Winemaker of the Year Janice McDonald of Burch Family Wines. Responsible for winemaking across three distinct labels and a large team, she makes her job seem effortless because of her talent, organisational skills and drive. The result of her toil is always high-quality, coveted wines.

Gourmet Traveller WINE’s Young Winemaker Medal goes to Owen Latta who has a wealth of experience despite his age and produces wine for Eastern Peake and Latta Vino from around Ballarat, his home town.

Thanks to Perpetual, Fred Peacock of Bream Creek has been recognised for his viticulturist skills. A supporter of the Tasmanian wine industry, his knowledge of the island state’s vineyards is second to none.

The Len Evans Award for Leadership was taken out by Coriole’s Mark Lloyd who throughout his career has campaigned for alternative varieties in Australia while crafting some of the country’s best shiraz.
