Adelaide Hills

It’s rare to find a capital city where you can drive 20 minutes from the CBD and be smack-bang in the middle of rolling vineyards, grand vistas and ancient gums. Adelaide Hills is literally on Adelaide’s doorstep and it boasts some of Australia’s best-known wineries, cracking boutique operators and an exciting, natty wine scene. With the recent devastating bushfires, now is the time to visit and support the winemakers here.

Star Winery

Cathy and Neil Howard have extensive backgrounds in the wine industry as winemaker and viticulturist respectively. After time in Margaret River, they bought this property on Whicher Ridge in 2003.

They grow sauvignon blanc, viognier and cabernet sauvignon there, and like many others in Geographe, source other varieties from Margaret River and Frankland River. You can enjoy a self-guided tasting of four wines, or a tutored tasting of six wines, or book ahead for a Pick and Sip Tour.

The Wine Sensory Garden has fruit trees, herbs, flowers and seasonal vegetables, which are designed to heighten the senses and make connections between those aromas and flavours and that of the different varieties made at the winery. Memorable. PETER FORRESTAL
