Adelaide Hills

It’s rare to find a capital city where you can drive 20 minutes from the CBD and be smack-bang in the middle of rolling vineyards, grand vistas and ancient gums. Adelaide Hills is literally on Adelaide’s doorstep and it boasts some of Australia’s best-known wineries, cracking boutique operators and an exciting, natty wine scene. With the recent devastating bushfires, now is the time to visit and support the winemakers here.

The complete winery experience awaits at Montalto, with behind-the-scenes tours, a sculpture trail, special events and the occasional music festival.

There’s a choice of dining style: the lauded fine-dining restaurant overlooking the vineyards; the more-casual Piazza featuring pizzas and share- plates; or a gourmet picnic at your own private site in the stunning grounds.

With more than a hectare of produce gardens, lunch is guaranteed to be fresh and seasonal. With the ability to draw fruit from five sites, winemaker Simon Black explores the diversity of the region.

There are juicy, affordable wines from the Pennon Hill range and cellar-worthy beauties from the Estate and Single Vineyard ranges. Pinot Noir and chardonnay are the champions, but excellent shiraz and aromatic varieties should not be overlooked. NICOLE  BILSON
