Not so much fence-sitting, as a valid recognition of how these two small producers have been able to redefine the concept of the traditional cellar door. Utilising unused shopfronts at either end of Clare’s main street, Matriarch & Rogue’s Marnie Roberts and Vanguardist’s Michael Corbett have established ‘tasting rooms’ as opposed to cellar doors, meshing the traditional act of sampling a winemaker’s wares with a small bar vibe.At the other end of the street, visitors to Vanguardist get insight on the vinous passions of Corbett, through the exciting wines he produces himself, and a small, carefully curated list of the kind of wines he likes to drink. The selection of charcuterie from the exceptional Les Deux Coqs suggests his commitment to deliciousness extends beyond the bottle all the way to his belly. NICK RYAN
