Barrecas is run by Fil and Kelly Barreca on the South Western Highway near Donnybrook. It’s been established for more than 25 years, with Fil operating a contract grape-growing business in addition to making wine for his family label, most of which is sold through cellar door. Success with their barbera at the 2006 International Concours del Barbera in Piedmont encouraged them to experiment with less well-known varieties although shiraz remains their most important grape. The best wines include a succulent shiraz viognier, a wonderfully aromatic and super-smooth grenache and a plush malbec. Those enjoying alternative varieties may be unable to resist the Barbera Superiore. The cellar door is a comfortable, welcoming space with its tasteful use of jarrah a highlight. There is excellent Plumm glassware, as well as tasting platters for grazing. An impressive range of local artisan produce is also available, including the excellent Cambray cheeses. The light leads visitors outdoors where relaxation is likely to be the dominant activity. PETER FORRESTAL
