The grand scale of the cellar door may have been more appropriate for the ambitions of its previous owners and at odds with this producer’s more down-to-earth wine focus. Gavin Berry and his team offer an extensive portfolio at three levels: the budget-priced Cape to Cape quaffers; a collection of varieties from the region with the focus on riesling, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, shiraz and cabernet; and the premium range, either single vineyard wines or those from the company’s best blocks – such as the Styx Gully Chardonnay, Karri Oak Pinot Noir and Book Ends Cabernet. What distinguishes West Cape Howe wines are their clear varietal and regional expression and fair prices. This cellar door also has quality coffee on offer, blended on-site each Tuesday.
