Great Southern

Distance is the key influence on experiencing the vast Great Southern region. Increased sophistication of the tourism experience, especially in Albany and Denmark, encourages visitors. It’s a region of small producers, given its spine by a few adventurous larger companies, and some avant-garde young(ish) winemakers such as Paul Nelson, Andries Mostert and Andrew Hoadley. Expect comfortable cellar doors with an abundance of natural light, excellent tasting glasses and the Great Southern’s hallmark modest prices.

Star Cellar Door

The grand scale of the cellar door may have been more appropriate for the ambitions of its previous owners and at odds with this producer’s more down-to-earth wine focus. Gavin Berry and his team offer an extensive portfolio at three levels: the budget-priced Cape to Cape quaffers; a collection of varieties from the region with the focus on riesling, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, shiraz and cabernet; and the premium range, either single vineyard wines or those from the company’s best blocks – such as the Styx Gully Chardonnay, Karri Oak Pinot Noir and Book Ends Cabernet. What distinguishes West Cape Howe wines are their clear varietal and regional expression and fair prices. This cellar door also has quality coffee on offer, blended on-site each Tuesday. Freshly made pizzas and platters are also available and its lavish lawns are pet-friendly. PETER  FORRESTAL
