Like all of the NSW wine regions, Mudgee has emerged from the coronavirus confusion with a renewed energy and a fresh approach to their cellar door format. Pre-booked and seated tastings for a small charge (often refundable with any wine purchase) are the norm, with the added bonus of top-shelf drops – historically unavailable for tasting – now included in the mix. The food offering has also stepped up a notch, from snacks to accompany a tasting to sophisticated restaurants like Pipeclay Pumphouse and Zin House. The wines are likewise in top form, with a push to Mediterranean varieties well suited to this temperate grape-growing region.

David Lowe found inspiration in the past 12 months of chaos, redefining his cellar door experience into something more personal and focused. The old entry via the car park has vanished, replaced with layered views over lush gardens, a bush chapel and a shimmering dam complete with a rustic jetty. Market umbrellas shade the outdoor tasting area, with Ian Marr sculptures dotted about. Inclement weather brings the action into the barrel hall of the galvanised iron-clad winery. For the full culinary adventure, book a table at much celebrated Zin House, run by David’s partner Kim Currie. Nestled between the winery and the restaurant is the Pavilion for weddings, parties or any frivolous celebration. Of course, those celebrations will include Lowe Family organic wines sourced from either their own Tinja Lane vineyard or sites in Orange.
