The Riverina is a region to keep an eye on; the wines here champion climate, with durif and botrytis semillon leading the way, along with an array of Mediterranean varieties like vermentino, montepulciano, petit verdot and barbera. The region’s Italian heritage shines, with an abundance of eateries showcasing why this is the food bowl of NSW. Each winery adds its own flair to the craft, but ultimately they’re tied together by their passion for community and showing off their little slice of Aussie wine country. Amy Northcott

From the moment you walk up the vine-laden entrance, you know you’re in true wine country at Yarran Wines. Marketing (and cellar door) star Katie Brown and winemaker Sam Brewer are a dynamic duo, with a refreshing enthusiasm for tourism. The wines are vibrant, and include their refreshing NV Cuvée Blanc, unique Montepulciano Rosé, bold and beautifully balanced Yenda Durif and modern Botrytis Semillon. Take a seat outside and be completely surrounded by estate vines for your tasting. You’ll likely linger all afternoon, with locally sourced platters and a recently launched bar menu. Yarran encompasses all required from a star cellar door, from the smiling welcome to being shown around by your host. AMY  NORTHCOTT
