Southern Tasmania

Several Tasmanian wine producers took advantage of the pandemic to transform their cellar door offerings with both our two regional winners opening impressive new tasting facilities. It was a challenging year on the island that produces just 1% of Australia’s wine but 4% of the value with a focus of sparkling, pinot noir and chardonnay. Cellar door sales are hugely important in Tasmania because many of the producers are family operators without overseas or interstate sales. That also means visitors can expect personalised service – although the boutique nature of many businesses means it is always worth phoning ahead to make sure they are open. Many operators will willingly open their doors if they think you are seriously interested.

Boutique Huon Valley producers Sailor Seeks Horse allow visitors to get up close and personal with the winemaking process at their cellar door/winery and barrel hall in Cygnet. You'll be tasting in the shadow of the wine tanks in comfortable chairs, well spaced out to cater for the Covid age. There is even a piano should you feel like bashing out a tune. Paul and Gilli Lipscombe, talented winemakers and viticulturists, share their space as part of the Port Cygnet Cannery complex and they regularly invite other small producers from the Huon Valley and neighbouring D’Entrecasteaux Channel to collaborate in weekend group tastings.Sailor Seeks Horse specialises in small-batch pinot noir and chardonnay grown on their estate vineyard just down the road in Cradoc. On days that The Cannery is open you can combine your tastings with pizzas made in an oven imported from Italy or maybe some freshly made tacos. WINSOR  DOBBIN
