One of the Veneto’s most celebrated wine families, the name Allegrini has been synonymous with exceptional quality Italian wine since the mid-20th century. So, in the name of expanding their already stellar reputation, sixth-generation Allegrini siblings Marilisa and Walter set their sights on one of the country’s most classically renowned wine areas: Tuscany.
In 2001, the pair bought land in Bolgheri, a highly sought-after area near the rugged Tuscan Coast best known for the famous and globally revered ‘Super Tuscan’ style of wine. It was here, on some of the most expressive land in Bolgheri, that Poggio al Tesoro was born.
The estate’s diversity of terroir helped dictate what varieties would be planted: powerful cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc in the poorer, sandier, stonier soils, while the nutrient rich clay soils were favoured for grapes such as merlot and syrah. Plantings on the estate started in 2003, and today it is home to close to 70 hectares of meticulously cared for, sustainably cultivated vineyards.
The wines of Poggio al Tesoro combine both strength and elegance. They are intense, deeply structured and personality-driven, aromatically rich and balanced with silky tannins. It’s the pinnacle expression of Bolgheri terroir.

IN 2007, armed with enviable determination and foresight, Marilisa purchased the San Polo property in another of Tuscany’s most renowned appellations, Montalcino – home of the ageworthy Brunello di Montalcino wines and some of the world’s most celebrated producers of sangiovese.
Located on Montalcino’s south-east slope at 450 metres above sea level, the San Polo property sits on the ideal terroir for sangiovese, which expresses the particular finesse of aromas and elegance that only a wine like Brunello di Montalcino can show. Evidently, the land was already special. Ever determined for constant improvement, Marilisa took it a step further in 2013 when San Polo was awarded the CasaClima Wine Certification for sustainable practices and eco-responsibility. A year later, San Polo started managing the vineyards organically – and by 2017, the estate’s 22 hectares were fully certified organic.
Today, with daughters Carlotta and Caterina as joint owners, Marilisa has continued her family’s legacy of fine, site-driven Italian wine through the vineyard parcelling to capture the estate’s unique and mixed expressions, with the San Polo’s Podernovi and Vignavecchia vineyards offering charm and nuance.
