Take a Trip to the Colour City

With its homely cellar doors and warm, country hospitality Orange is a region to discover some of New South Wales’ best wine and produce.

Slow Wine Co take time to nurture their wines from vine to glass.

Orange produces some class examples of cool-climate wines, with the region’s Mt Canobolas providing elevation levels from 600m all the way to around 1100m. This range in elevation gives Orange a wide scope when it comes to wine styles and varieties: expect stunning varietal riesling, chardonnay, pinot noir along with alternative varieties like tempranillo and nebbiolo.

Enjoy a tasting at the barrels and Slow Wine Co.

But it’s not just the wine you’ll be impressed by here. The gastronomic scene in Orange is thriving, showcasing unique produce and hosting some truly memorable dining experiences. At just a 3.5 drive from both Sydney and Canberra, it’s the perfect weekend adventure to escape the daily grind and take in the fresh, country air.

Here are some of our favourite spots to check out on your next visit.

Philip Shaw’s Koomooloo Vineyard is one of the best-known vineyards in the region.

On your drive into Orange, stop in at the charming town of Millthorpe for a visit to Slow Wine Co. The mantra behind Slow Wine Co is ‘Wines Crafted By Time’; the team nurtures their wines through delicate hand-management in the vineyards and winery. Take a seat in the rustic cellar door or outside at a barrel to dive into their portfolio with a tasting led by the friendly team. If you also find yourself looking for a dinner spot, the Slow Wine Co cellar door transforms into a bar in the evening serving tapas-style snacks. While you’re in Millthorpe, check out Angullong Wines for a tasting in their 1800s-bluestone cellar door. Be sure to spend some time tasting through the range, and don’t miss their sauvignon blanc, along with their Fossil Hill wines and flagship Crossing Reserve wines.

It’s time to head into Orange itself, for an afternoon spent at the Philip Shaw Wines cellar door. Philip Shaw’s Koomooloo Vineyard is one of the best-known vineyards in the region, sitting at a whopping 900 metres above sea level and is used to craft some impressive cool-climate wines. The cellar door offers a range of bookable tasting experiences for your visit. If time permits, also check out their Picnic in the Gardens offering, or the Meet the Maker Winery Tour and Tasting to meet winemaker Dan Shaw.

The picturesque Colmar Estate Cellar Door.

Spend the following morning at Colmar Estate, for a tasting of their award-winning portfolio at the picturesque cellar door. Owners Bill and Jane Shrapnel produce some of the region’s most elegant and expressive wines from their high altitude vineyard. Don’t miss their pristine examples of riesling, pinot noir and chardonnay.

Next up is the delightful Printhie Wines. Housed in an old apple packing shed, the cellar door (which is only temporary – the new one is being built as we speak) is a charming spot to taste through their range – great examples of shiraz, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, while if you’re looking for some of Australia’s most exceptional sparkling, look no further than their Swift range.

Your last stop on this Orange adventure is to Strawhouse Wines, to settle in an afternoon tasting. In winter, rug up by their fire, while in summer take in the cellar door views with a seat outside overlooking the Boree Creek Valley. Spend some time tasting through the Strawhouse range before heading back home, which features varieties like shiraz, chardonnay, merlot, sauvignon blanc and merlot.

Settle in for the afternoon at Strawhouse Wines.
