A Brand New Day

A hallmark of nature is that nothing remains the same, with each year presenting new challenges and possibilities in the vineyards. That’s why every vintage release of wine generates such interest and why we were so eager to taste the Bordeaux en primeur 2020 wines when they arrived on our shores. Our panel was equally enthusiastic about the second instalment of their New Zealand pinot noir tasting, focusing on the South Island. We shine the spotlight on local sangiovese as it starts to hit its straps and investigate the pros and cons of whole-bunch fermentation.

For those after a change of scenery, the charm of NSW’s Orange wine region beckons, while embarking on a ‘by appoint’ tour of Victoria’s Beechworth will be rewarded with access to worthwhile wines and precious time with the people who make them. Innovative vignerons in Turkey are combining old and new as they make modern wines from ancient indigenous grape varieties. It could be argued that nothing much has changed at Henschke’s hallowed Hill of Grace site, but there’s still a tale to tell.

Much has progressed at GT WINE, too. Regular contributor and wine critic Nick Stock takes over our Top New Release pages from Huon Hooke who has been a treasured member of our crew for more than 20 years and remains on the judging panel for our 2021 Winemaker of the Year Awards. Talented new creative director Ellen Erickson is already working her magic and, in line with our charter to nurture and promote young, talented people who will ensure our content remains relevant into the future, I am thrilled to hand over the baton to my colleague Dom Sweeney who has more than earnt his place as our new editor. From the next issue onwards, he will bring his own fresh ideas to these pages as well as our digital editions, and I will back him to the hilt in my role as editor-in-chief.
