The Best Wine Brand You’ve Never Heard

gourmet traveller Wine

Giovanni Patritti established the Patritti winery in Adelaide in 1926 and subsequently went on to purchase a number of vineyards in McLaren Vale. With exceptional quality grapes and great winemaking a central focus for this family-owned winery, Patritti has since developed a strong reputation for producing some of the most premium examples of McLaren Vale shiraz and grenache. Patritti’s prized vineyards, situated in the McLaren Vale subregions of Blewitt Springs and Tatachilla, have an average vine age of 50 years plus, meaning they can be classified as ‘old vine’. Shiraz and grenache vines of this pedigree produce some of the most sought-after grapes in Australia; with a high level of care in both the vineyard and winery, they will result in wines of elegance, complexity and longevity.

Patritti crafts three single vineyard shiraz wines from its Blewitt Springs vineyard. The ancient sandy soil imparts a unique flavour profile on the finished wine, including blue fruits and peat, and with the changes in aspect, elevation and soil composition throughout the site, the Patritti Blewitt Springs vineyard is well-equipped for producing layered, complex fruit.

The Patritti JPB Limited Release Shiraz displays the elegance of Blewitt Springs, with all the depth and intensity you’d expect from old vines. The fruit is handpicked from the highest point in the vineyard, where the yields are low but flavour intensity is high. The result is a rich, full-bodied shiraz, with concentrated fruit flavours of plum, blueberry, raspberry and dark chocolate, bound seamlessly by perfectly integrated American oak.

The fruit for the Patritti Lot Three Shiraz is handpicked from a section lower in elevation but similar aspect to the JPB, resulting in a distinguished, refined wine with great texture and structure. The palate is medium bodied with flavours of plum, blueberry and black fruits and the hallmark savoury peat character.

The Patritti Merchant Shiraz is sourced from the slightly warmer ‘square block’ section of the Blewitt Springs vineyard. The grapes sourced here result in a quintessential McLaren Vale shiraz, with rich colour, ripe red and black fruit flavours and superb balance and structure.
