The view from the deck at Dudley Wines cellar door would have to go down as one of the finest of any Australian winery. Perched atop the stunning Kangaroo Island coastal hills, the amazing sweeping vista looks over the rolling swells of Backstairs Passage and across to Victor Harbour and the mainland.
Located 12 kilometres from the Penneshaw ferry terminal, Jeff and Val Howard are pioneers of the Kangaroo Island wine industry and run their beef cattle farm & winery at the charmingly named, Porky Flat on the Island’s north coast. I certainly wouldn’t be telling a porky if I were to suggest this should be your first port of call when you visit this amazing slice of South Australia.
Dudley Wines have picked up a swag of tourism awards and it’s not hard to see why. The cellar door is spacious, the staff friendly and knowledgeable and the ranges of wines crafted by the Howards’ son, Brodie, a fifth-generation Islander, are delicious. Fresh, bright flavours and inherent drinkability are the order of the day. Add in a regular events calendar, great food from local KI produce and plenty of room for the kids to tear around while you enjoy some whale watching over oysters and a glass of vino and they are onto a winner.
