Langhorne Creek is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions yet when you visit, you feel that you’ve been let in on a wonderful secret. Vines were being planted in the early 1850s and today there is a lovely sense that the region is a confluence of the traditional and the contemporary with great wines and a deep respect for the history of this famous region.
The winery that achieves this balance of old and new effortlessly is Bleasdale. With 168 years of winemaking and six generations of the Potts family involved in the winery it’s no wonder these walls emit such a strong feeling of tradition.
The cellar door is spacious and airy and the experienced, friendly staff will guide you through the range of Bleasdale’s wines from breezy, bright whites to traditional fortifieds for which the region has built such reputation.
Winemaker Paul Hotker is at the top of his game at the moment and the quality of the wines from this famous estate has never been better. Make sure you make a pilgrimage inside the winery to see the jaw-dropping 1892 3.5 tonne red gum lever-press and hand-hewn red gum vats. It is pretty special. DAVID BROOKES
