The Calabria family have embraced their Italian heritage and the wine varieties, which are well-matched with the Riverina’s warm climate and Australia’s love of Mediterranean food. While Bill Calabria is omnipresent, it’s his children who are now at the action end of things with winemaker Emma Norbiato refining Bill’s vinous vision.
The rebranding from Westend to Calabria was a masterstroke with all wines in the extensive portfolio credible from the Three Bridges to the Cool Climate Series – from (obviously) cooler sites around New South Wales. However, the Private Bin range is the most compelling – value packed, dangerously drinkable and so, so food friendly. They all deserve a mention, but the pinot bianco, vermentino, aglianico, nero d’Avola and Montepulciano are a must. The cellar door staff are willing, ready and able with lots of information and top notch Riedel stemware. PETER BOURNE
