Shaw + Smith are on song at the moment. Their wines are fantastic across the board and a visit to the minimalist cellar door should top the list for anyone searching the Adelaide Hills for vinous treasures. The building, with its sleek lines, sits among the rolling hills and vineyards between Balhannah and Hahndorf; as you enter the main gate, it’s a fine spectacle in the beautiful rural setting.
The Shaw + Smith range has expanded with the acquisition of vineyard holdings in Lenswood and in Tasmania; the extended portfolio is available for tasting. Sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir and shiraz are represented admirably; the M3 Chardonnay and single-vineyard offerings are particularly impressive. The wines are presented in reasonably priced tasting flights – both the Adelaide Hills wines and Tasmanian Tolpuddle ranges – matched to a selection of amazing cheeses. The staff is super friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, tailoring each tasting to the individual customers’ needs. Wine is available by the glass and bottle to enjoy on the terrace. A must-visit.
