The historic Seppeltsfield cellar door seems to have a stranglehold on the Barossa Valley top spot and for good reason. As you walk through the beautiful grounds the sense of history – and of the Seppelt family’s extraordinary vision – is palpable. The fortifieds are a national treasure and the table wines are on a roll. The cellar door is spacious with well thought-out pods where you can sample the wines. There’s a daily heritage tour and the chance to taste your birth-year fortified – and the epic 100-year-old Para Tawny. Add in bike hire, Segway tours, the wonderful Jam Factory gallery and studios, plus the delicious food at Fino and it’s easy to see why Seppeltsfield is the complete package. It’s also one of the prime spots for a picnic: lounge under the date palms and soak in the atmosphere of one of Australia’s great wineries. It’s the real deal. DAVID BROOKES
