Robert Fiumara is a gentle giant with a heart of gold. Indeed, his haul of medals and trophies could well inflate his ego but he remains steadfastly down to earth – an attitude reflected by the staff at the Lillypilly cellar door. Not that Fiumara won’t be at his cellar door, as he’s often there happily showing people around his winery and discussing his unique approach to winemaking. And it is a truly unique approach. His very first wine, a blend of gewürztraminer and semillon (he called it Tramillon), won a Trophy and Gold at the 1983 Royal Sydney Wine Show. Semillon is a cornerstone variety with a swathe of botrytised dessert styles a Lillypilly speciality. Red Velvet is another example of Fiumara’s lateral thinking – its light almost rosé style, soft red that deserves a chill on a hot day.
There are plenty of hot days in Leeton but even in the depth of winter the welcome is always warm at Lillypilly cellar door. It’s a no-frills operation with the focus (proudly) on the wines, and it’s likely to be Rob or a family member pouring for you – don’t leave empty-handed.
