Perched atop a hill overlooking the rolling vineyards of the Clare Valley, one of Australia’s prettiest and most enjoyable wine regions, lies the impressive cellar door of O’Leary Walker wines.
It’s a snazzy looking building with a modern, open feel and sleek lines. The ironstone and timber cellar door opens up onto the grassed area with those great Clare Valley views, which is just lovely. The range of wines at O’Leary Walker is top-notch and being so deep in riesling territory, as you’d expect, the aromatic white wines are uniformly delicious. But don’t forget the Clare shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, too!
There is a spaciousness to the cellar door itself which makes sampling the wares a pleasurable experience and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, more than willing to pass on local advice to visitors to the region.
There are gourmet platters, cheese plates and charcuterie available during the week for the peckish and the offerings amp up on the weekends. Grab a glass of wine, a bite to eat and a picnic rug and go and hang out on the grass for a while. DAVID BROOKES
