Adelaide Hills

It’s rare to find a capital city where you can drive 20 minutes from the CBD and be smack-bang in the middle of rolling vineyards, grand vistas and ancient gums. Adelaide Hills is literally on Adelaide’s doorstep and it boasts some of Australia’s best-known wineries, cracking boutique operators and an exciting, natty wine scene. With the recent devastating bushfires, now is the time to visit and support the winemakers here.

Winemaker Marcus Satchell and Lisa Sartori are the dynamic duo behind Dirty Three Wines and their cellar door known as D3HQ, an urban winery in Inverloch. The Gippsland landscape is home to the three distinct single vineyard pinot noirs at the heart of this label – with another known as Sourced by Satch – Marcus’ nickname. He even suggests tunes to drink those wines – Adele’s Rolling in the Deep while sipping the 2018 Pinot Gris.

Back at the modern sleek space that is D3HQ, relax with a plate of local cheese or small goods or book in for a private tutored tasting and let these two explain why their patch of dirt makes great wine.  JANE FAULKNER
