The view from the deck at the Dudley Wines cellar door is really something. It is perched on the edge of Kangaroo Island’s coastal hills with a sweeping vista and looks out over Cuttlefish Bay, and across Backstairs Passage to Cape Jervis and the South Australian mainland. As far as I’m concerned, and I’m sure you’ll agree, the opportunity to hang out on a deck, drinking wine and nibbling on something delicious while spotting whales and dolphins is something that gets a big ‘tick’.
The cellar door is a 12-kilometre drive from the ferry terminal at Penneshaw along Kangaroo Island’s northern coastline. The property is a working beef farm and is owned by Kangaroo Island wine industry pioneers Jeff and Val Howard and it is a lovely place to start your journey across this amazing slice of South Australia.
Their range of wines and tasting flight options are great and there are a number of platter and pizza options for those in need of sustenance after the ferry trip from the mainland. Plenty of space for the kids to burn off some energy while you chill out and enjoy that view, too. DAVID BROOKES
