There are far grander winery restaurants on the Peninsula and grander estates, too, but Foxeys Hangout isn’t about grandness and size. It’s like a groovy little Brunswick Street cafe has set down amid the stunning undulating hills of a Red Hill farm bringing the best of the city to the country.
Brothers Michael and Tony Lee have a long history in hospitality, it shows not only in the food and vibe at Foxeys, but in their wines which come at four price points from A$28 to A$65 and in between. Individual vineyards and different clones are a feature for pinot noir and chardonnay and while these grapes are undoubtedly behind the winery’s reputation, it would be remiss not to taste the shiraz. Much-lauded in wine shows, Foxeys Shiraz proves most decisively that the grape can do extraordinarily well in this super-cool maritime climate.
Enjoy a glass out on the deck with one of the best views on the Peninsula with a plate of barbecue quail, or mushrooms sausage rolls, cooked by Tony who is also a trained chef. JENI PORT
