Surrounded by vines and open pastures, the small town of Avenel is becoming a major food and wine destination. Long-time resident and former wine writer, Sarah Gough, is a driving force combining her Box Grove Vineyard wines with local foods at the small Osteria at her vineyard. Make a booking in advance and plan for a one-of-a-kind-tasting experience.
In summer, tastings are on the verandah overlooking the creek, in winter it’s inside by the fire. She sources locally-cured ham, pastrami, her own giardiniera and more with a tasting of Box Grove wines where her emphasis is on alternative grape varieties that do well in the Central Victorian region, notably the Rhône Valley white grape, roussanne. The accent at Box Grove is on food-friendly textural whites and savoury, medium-bodied reds. JENI PORT
