The De Bortoli family is amazing at producing terrific and innovative wines at astonishingly modest prices. Their Yarra Valley outpost may garner much attention but it’s the Riverina home-base that remains the driving force.
The Bilbul cellar door isn’t a ‘fancy pants’ operation, just a hive of vinous activity with excellent service from knowledgeable staff. The friendly feel extends to the offer of a BYO picnic in the gardens with children more than welcome. At the tasting bar you’ll be offered the value-for-money Deen Vat range, the quirky Down The Lane drops, and icons like the Noble One and Black Noble. Look out for the Florence Broadhurst Botrytis Semillon – just another example of the innate flair of the De Bortoli family. PETER BOURNE
