When it comes to cellar doors, Moorilla Estate has a decidedly unfair advantage over its Tasmanian rivals. Moorilla is under the same ownership as, and shares facilities with, MONA, Hobart’s gourmet/art wonderland.
Conor van der Reest, the talented young winemaker, produces small-batch, cool-climate wines using fruit both from the Moorilla site at Berriedale, north of Hobart overlooking the River Derwent and St Matthias vineyard at Rosevears in the north of the state.
Big isn’t always best, of course. Many wine lovers prefer a more personal experience, but the Moorilla offerings include dining at the upmarket The Source Restaurant, which serves breakfast and lunch Wednesday-Monday and dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.
The new Faro tapas bar is open to museum visitors Wednesday to Monday during the day, and then for dinner on the same days. The cellar door is open six days for tastings of Moorilla wines and Moo Brew beers, while winery tours are available daily (except Tuesdays) and the Wine Bar hosts communal dining events twice a week.
