Adelaide Hills

It’s rare to find a capital city where you can drive 20 minutes from the CBD and be smack-bang in the middle of rolling vineyards, grand vistas and ancient gums. Adelaide Hills is literally on Adelaide’s doorstep and it boasts some of Australia’s best-known wineries, cracking boutique operators and an exciting, natty wine scene. With the recent devastating bushfires, now is the time to visit and support the winemakers here.

Mandoon Estate

Star Winery

Rarely does a winery tick all the boxes as Mandoon does. Its latest addition is The Colony – a 32-room luxury hotel on the property, overlooking ancient verdelho vines and the Swan River. Add the best range of eating experiences in the Valley: a rare fine dining restaurant, a cafe in their Brewery, and decent pizza and lamb on the spit for those enjoying the plush lawns and picnic tables.

The historic property – allocated to the state’s first surveyor general John Septimus Roe, in 1829 and in the Roe family for more than 100 years – was bought by the Ercegs in 2008, and under the direction of Allan Erceg, has become arguably the Valley’s favourite tourist destination. There’s also the the Linton & Kay Art Gallery in the original homestead. Best of all is the stellar range of wines by outstanding winemaker, Ryan Sudano. PETER FORRESTAL
