This year Gourmet Traveller WINE was incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of one of our original judges Raymond Chan, who not only contributed so much to the judging process, but to NZ wine in general. The panel for the 2020 NZ Winemaker of the Year Awards was chaired by GT WINE’s NZ Editor Bob Campbell MW, and included industry stalwarts Cameron Douglas MS and Liz Wheadon.

GT WINE’s 2020 New Zealand Winemaker of the Year is Jen Parr of Valli Vineyards. A born-and-bred Oregonian who has found a home among the pinot noir vines of Central Otago, Parr’s infectious zeal for the grape has seen her produce an outstanding array of terroir-driven wines.

This year the panel could not overlook the impact organic viticulture has had on the NZ wine industry, and so, the Leadership Award goes to NZ’s own father of organics James Millton, while Jason Flowerday is recognised for his mentoring work and his organic vineyard Te Whare Ra.
