 “We treat our beer just as seriously as our wine.” These words gladden the heart of any beer drinker, especially on the opening page of a restaurant wine list. 

 Beer is important at Charred Kitchen & Bar in Orange. The restaurant opened last year, and its serious approach to both grain as well as grape perfectly captures the energy of this exciting food and wine hub in country New South Wales. 

You don’t see too many beers on draught at restaurants, but Charred opens its beer list with five, including a pale ale from Orange’s own Walkers Brewing Co. Breweries from around the state like The Little Brewing Company, Nomad Brewing Co and Murray’s Craft Brewing Co feature, but this is essentially a cherry-picked list of creative brewers from around the world like New Zealand’s Yeastie Boys fooling around with Earl Grey blue flower tea to generate florals in their Gunnamatta IPA, and Schöfferhofer’s daring combination of beer and grapefruit juice, a world first. 

The overriding impression for beer lovers is that enough styles are here to enjoy throughout a meal without resorting to the wine list. JENI PORT
