There are benefits to be had as a member of The Queen’s Club, like buying Champagne at half the usual restaurant price, tasting some edgy natural wines (if that’s your thing) or letting yourself loose among the world-class auslese and spatlese rieslings of Mosel’s J.J. Prüm.

Established in 1912, the vinous pleasures that await are known only to club members and their guests, and there are many in the 420-strong wine list.

Sommelier Michael Solomons guides this smart, cosmopolitan list, which is ostensibly led by Australian makers with a band of strong internationals.

This is an energised, thoughtful presentation that embraces cool, young dudes like Matchbox Wines, Domaine Lucci and Arfion and their redefined interpretations of Australian winemaking as well as more established big guns, such as Cape Mentelle, Tyrrell’s and Tahbilk.

The shiraz listing is particularly mouth-watering and the opportunity to enjoy back vintages of top wines from Clonakilla, Auguste Clape, Rockford, Domaine du Collier and the experience that is Sami-Odi syrah raises this list above the others. Jeni Port

Established in 1885 The Newcastle Club certainly has not been resting on its laurels, with an up to date wine list that offers both the classics and the eclectic. The list is impressive and wide ranging and what was so great to see was the emphasis, quite rightly, put on Australian wines and New South Wales wines in particular. These wines, including about forty Semillon options, five vintages of Tyrrell’s Vat 1 and twelve vintages of Grange sit comfortably among other acclaimed global producers ensuring a wide range of options and choice for the diner. The list is very well set out, easy to navigate and really enjoyable to peruse.

Sustainability is celebrated at Carmodys – both in the kitchen and in the bottle. Detailed descriptions add gravitas to this eclectic winelist sourced form all corners of the vinous globe. There's plenty of value on offer – be it a juicy Cotes du Rhone, a classic St Henri magnum or cult red from Wendouree.

CHAIRMAN'S COMMENTS: The Queens and Newcastle Club continue to lead the way. Apart from the established Hall of Famers – Royal Sydney Yacht Club and RACV City Club – we don’t see much evidence of clubs keeping these wine traditions alive.
