We’ve all heard those tales of wine lovers wandering into a country pub, only to find an Ali Baba’s collection of great wines. Normally, the staff have no idea of their treasures and the oenophile guests behave like bandits.

This is half true at the Healesville Hotel. An extraordinary collection, undoubtedly, but the staff here know full well what they have and work exceptionally hard to maintain it. Visitors will still feel like they have struck gold.

To win a regional wine list award, it helps to be located in a top district. This hotel enjoys the benefit of being smack-bang in the middle of the Yarra Valley, and the list takes full advantage of that. There are plenty of superb wines from other areas of Australia and overseas, but it is the stunning and extensive collection of Yarra wines that will enthral.

Among the many highlights at the moment are Oakridge, Gembrook Hill, Seville Estate, Timo Mayer, Mac Forbes and Hoddles Creek – surely the last chance we’ll ever have to try some of these wines. The local theme extends to craft beers and gins. Ken Gargett

Settlers Tavern is a unique Australian pub where you can drink world class wine, at incredibly low prices, in a relaxed and casual setting. The
list is amazingly diverse, with top-notch producers sitting comfortably alongside young guns. There's an extensive listing by-the-glass, a hearty main list, ever-changing blackboards and a 'rare and limited' collection. Live music, pub food and great wine…sounds pretty perfect to me.

Goldfish bar & Kitchen has a great selection of Hunter Valley wines, and isn't that what one looks for when one is holding in the Hunter Valley? There is a wonderful selection of current vintage semillons – the jewel in the crown of Hunter – but it doesn't stop there. Goldfish also showcases a "Cellar Collection" that has verticals of Lovedale, Tyrrell's Vat 1, and the iconic Mount Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz. Let us not forget the
Lake's Folly cabernets from Hunter. They have a large selection of all things alcoholic and not wine: beer, spirits, cocktails, aperitifs and mocktails. Going to Pokolbin? Stop in at Goldfish – do yourself (and your palate) a favour.

CHAIRMAN'S COMMENTS: Settlers Tavern’s list has been in the spotlight for a decade or so, and is celebrated for its exploration of the local Margaret River region. Goldfish Bar & Kitchen places an extensive focus on the Hunter Valley and Appellation similarly offers a unique view of the Barossa.
