 It’s wonderful to peruse Café Sydney’s wine list and realise that it’s as proudly Australian as its iconic harbourside venue. Indeed, it’s a celebration of antipodean wine. Yes, the Kiwis get a jersey in their appropriate varietal categories, but the heart and soul of this list is Australian. 

 It’s a thoughtful selection showcasing traditional regions and varieties alongside the new-wave, edgy and exciting wines that speak of our future. Thus, Grosset rubs shoulders with Rieslingfreak, Rockford vies with Jamsheed and shiraz plays off against mencia. 

The integrity of the Café Sydney wine list comes as no surprise when you discover the sommelier is Simon Curkovic with a stellar resume of Sydney’s top restaurants, think Catalina, Marque and Quay. Curkovic’s creative skills are clearly displayed in his by-the-glass selection with 40 table wines and 20 dessert and fortifieds, there’s something for every palate and pocket. PETER BOURNE
