It might sound a strange thing to say about the by-the-glass list, but my first thought was, ‘now here are some wines I’d really love to drink’. Sadly, far too often, it is not so. Maude Pinot Noir, Tyrrell’s HVD Semillon, as well as a couple of the wonderful Equipo Navazos sherries, are just some of the offerings.

The Newcastle Club has sourced wines from all corners of this country and indeed, the globe, but this being Newcastle, proximity to the Hunter Valley ensures that it will be judged on wines from one of our oldest regions. While there is plenty of attractive Hunter shiraz on offer, it is the semillon that shines. It provides an extensive, well-priced array from the region, covering and identifying the subregions, with mature examples dating back to the turn of the century. There is also an impressive riesling collection from here and abroad, with all styles covered; the same applies for pinot noir.

Many guests will gravitate to the ‘Australian Icons’ selection. This consists of verticals of Grange (back to 1972), Hill of Grace and RWT.

A fine list, possibly the best thing to come out of Newcastle since the Johns brothers. Ken Gargett
